Yishi Manor: Century-old Royal Vineyard, Integrating Chinese and Western Traditions

Yishi Manor has a profound historical and cultural heritage dating back to the Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty.

According to historical records, as foreign envoy s and expatriates increased during the Kangxi period, wine was introduced to the imperial court as tribute to the emperor.

Recommended by his trusted French missionary Joachim Bouvet, Emperor Kangxi began to drink a moderate amount of wine daily.

After a period of time, he found wine beneficial to health and compared high-quality wine to “human milk”, forming a regular drinking habit.

Later, due to the “Chinese-Western Rites Controversy”, Emperor Kangxi ordered the selection of vineyards to start wine production.

In the 49th year of Kangxi’s reign,

Minister Mu Helun was ordered to build the royal vineyard “Yiyuan” in Miyun, marking the beginning of China’s wine-making exploration.
